It is my last kid to teach how to potty train.

I’ve done this five times before.

Granted, the others were boys and this one is a girl, but everyone has always told me that girls are easier to train than boys. Turns out, they’re wrong in this instance.

Yes, I do remember all of the others. I remember the accidents and wondering when they were going to finally go poo in the potty! This little girl however, is a whole different story.

At first I thought it was because she didn’t quite know how to get those muscles to work down there on command.

Nope.

She can stop playing in the backyard, run to the grass, take off her pants, pee standing up, and then return to playing.

You’d think she was a boy! Raised by boys is more like it, my goodness!!

She can hold it for hours on end if it means not getting her Elsa underwear wet.

After all of this struggle, here is what I have learned.

She is teaching me.

So I will leave the potty out and when little Miss Independent decides she is ready, then that is when we will potty train.

To be honest, it has been this way with most things in parenthood…

While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about.

Most of the things they teach me mean a lot more than to just wait until they’re ready to be potty trained. They teach me to understand more, slow down, be a good friend, to take time to just be with others and so many more.

Here are my top three life lessons to learn from kids.

3 THINGS MY KIDS HAVE TAUGHT ME:

1. EVERY CREATION IS AMAZING

Have you noticed lately the way the wind is blowing the leaves or watched the ripples when you throw a rock in the water?

Kids have.

It is so fun watching them explore. There is a favorite area close by that has some fun and easy trails for the kids to wander. However, every single time we go there, we make it to the stream that is lined with rocks and come to a halt. They want to sit and throw rocks into the water over and over and over. This has been true for every one of my children.

They can’t sit still for me to even brush their teeth, but they can sit down for what seems like hours just throwing rocks into the water.

When I am with them I try to look at the world through their eyes and discover that yes, every creation is so very amazing!

2. LEARNING NEW THINGS HAPPENS EVERY DAY

One of the biggest highlights of parenthood is the joy of watching all of your child’s firsts!

First rain, first block stacking, first clap, first step and so on. While we may not be learning to walk anymore, there is still so much to learn and take in.

Getting to watch six kids learn things for the first time has been such a sweet blessing.

Our oldest is now driving and that is a huge first! Oh, and “It’s not as easy as I thought,” was never expected to come out of his mouth, but it sure did on his first driving experience.

Even as adults, we need to keep learning, keep exploring and take each first that we have with the same joy we did as children!

3. IT WILL ALL BE OK

No matter how stressed I get about things, my kids continue to teach me that everything will work out, it will all be ok.

They can go from a scratched knee to climbing the playground again in such a quick time. They fail and try again.

Not one of us ever said that walking was just too hard and not for us. We tried, fell, stood up and tried again and again and again.

Life isn’t easy and parenting is tough, but I sure do cherish the out-of-the-blue hugs and the dandelion bouquets that help me to remember that I need to get back up to try again.

And yes, it all really will work be ok.
